It has been almost a year since I took my first oath as a public servant in Chatham Township. I have learned a lot, and have a much better understanding of my role, the role of the Committee, the role of the community, and the task at hand. As a volunteer, and as a citizen of Chatham Township, Committee members have a fiduciary duty to do what is best for ALL of our constituents, including making sure we have the infrastructure to support us (public safety, housing, water treatment), to continue to maintain the beauty and open space of Chatham, and to be a welcoming community. All while keeping fiscally responsible.
When I think of who will best fill this role for the Committee in the upcoming election, it is Craig Alperowitz--not based on party, but based on the person, and the ability to fulfill the duties. As per the definition of a public servant, Craig has served our community for years, through EMS, coaching, and as a friend and neighbor. Craig doesn’t play games, but simply gets the work done.
This is a small town, and there is no place for political theatrics and spreading of disinformation. We have come a long way in lowering the political temperature, and I feel as if the progress made is being challenged by the latest smatterings of untrue statements such as plans to demolish the police station on Southern Boulevard and references to a mysterious push for high density high rises. Craig and the current Committee want positive outcomes that maintain the charm of Chatham Township while balancing our state-mandated housing requirements, a well-resourced and professionally housed police department, and a municipal building that is fit for purpose, among others. We will work together towards these goals with community input.
Healthy dialogue, and openness to ideas is what we should be seeking in our local government (just because members are of the same party does not mean that they all have the same viewpoints). Scaremongering doesn’t serve anyone – we have been down that road and don’t want to go back.
Vote for a Committee that will work together for the good of ALL citizens, and please cast your vote for Craig on November 5.
